BASKETBALL RULES
ALL PLAYERS MUST BE IN FULL UNIFORM. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN A TECHNICAL FOR EACH PLAYER NOT IN FULL UNIFORM. FULL UNIFORM INCLUDES BDL-ISSUED JERSEY AND SHORTS. EXCEPTION TO NOT HAVING BDL-ISSUED SHORTS, THE ENTIRE TEAM MUST HAVE MATCHING SHORTS (COLOR AND STYLE).

GAME RULES
-
The game shall be played according to standard high school basketball rules (NFHS), with the following modifications:
-
Each player is allowed up to 6 fouls.
-
Bonus begins at 7 team fouls.
-
Half length:
-
Games are played in 16-minute halves for Adult Silver and Gold divisions.
-
Games are played in 18-minute halves for Adult Diamond division.
-

Free throws:
-
One free throw is awarded for all shooting fouls before the final 2 minutes of each half.
-
In the final 2 minutes of each half, free throws are awarded according to the play, including bonus situations. This means 2 shots for shooting fouls and bonus, 3 shots for three-point attempts, and 1 shot for and-ones

Each team is allowed 3 timeouts per game.
-
The clock runs continuously until the final 2 minutes of each half.
-
The clock stops after made baskets during the final 2 minutes of each half and in overtime.

Overtime Rules:
-
Overtime begins with a jump ball.
-
Teams continue to score on the same basket as in the second half.
-
No additional timeouts are awarded during overtime.
-
Team foul counts carry over into overtime.
-
A maximum of two overtime periods will be played, each lasting 2 minutes with a stopped clock.
-
If the game remains tied after two overtime periods, a third overtime period will be played as sudden death.

Out of bounds
-
If the ball hits the structure of the backboard, the ball is OUT of bounds. The top, side, or bottom of the backboard is still in play.

Throw-ins/inbound from the spot where the ball went out of bounds/where the violation occurred/where the timeout was called.

Uniforms
-
Players must wear league-issued numbered uniforms.
-
Teams can bring their own uniforms, but players must be wearing matching shorts and jerseys.
-
An automatic 2-point administrative technical foul will be assessed for each player not complying with the above rules.
-
Head coverings are not allowed except for religious purposes.
-
Jewelry and casts are not allowed.
-
Hoodies are not allowed to be worn under jerseys.

Start of Game / Team Composition
-
Teams must have a minimum of four players to start the game.
-
Teams failing to meet this requirement will forfeit the game.
-
A team may recruit players from a lower division or any girls to fill out a roster.
-
Any other player recruited for temporary fill-in must be approved by the opponent team’s captain.
-
Teams not having enough players on game day must notify the League by Thursday or be penalized $25 and given an automatic forfeit.
-
All teams in Silver must have 1.5 girls on the court at all times, no exceptions. 1 girl must play the entire game and at least 2 girls must play for half the game.

All teams in Gold and Diamond must have 1 girl on the court at all times.

Technical Fouls (Non-flagrant)
-
Technical fouls are called for actions that are considered detrimental to the game.

Examples of Technical Fouls (but not limited to):
-
Arguing with an official
-
Taunting an opponent
-
Using profanity or displaying unsportsmanlike behavior

Hanging on the basket
-
Excessive timeouts
-
Delaying the games
-
Team having more than 5 players on the court

Spectator misconduct
-
Practicing during timeouts
-

A player may be ejected/expelled. No refunds.
-
A player receiving 2 technical fouls will be suspended for one game.
-
A player receiving 3 technical fouls will be suspended for the season.
-
A technical foul is a personal and team foul.
-
2 free throws and the ball will be given to the opposing team.

Flagrant foul

Criteria
-
Flagrant 1 - Unnecessary contact committed by a player against an opponent. (Non-basketball play)
-
Flagrant 2 - Unnecessary and excessive contact committed by a player against an opponent. (Non-basketball play that can cause injury to an opponent)

A flagrant 1 will result in an ejection from the game.
-
A flagrant 2 will result in an ejection from the game and suspension for the season.
-
A flagrant foul is a personal and team foul.
-
An automatic 2 points and the ball will be given to the opposing team.

Interpretation / Points of Emphasis

An offensive player dipping the shoulder or extending the off arm is an offensive foul.

Offensive player initiating contact with a defender

Diving for the ball / loose ball foul

An offensive player should avoid contact with the defender, if possible.

Once a player leaves their feet, they are responsible for where they land.

Other rules:

Free-throw shooter leaves too early (before the ball hits the rim).

Hopping on one foot with the ball

Kill dribble

Picking up the ball on one's hip
